DescriptionTraveler's Palm Hand drawn with pen and India ink on paper
Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.~ Henry David Thoreau
As a traveler myself, I loved the name of this plant, and its grand beauty. At the base of each leaf bracket is a hollow, that can hold a liter of fresh water. Refreshment jungle style.
The Travelers Palm is related to Bananas and Bird-of-Paradise and not Palm Trees. It probably was given name Travelers Palm by early explorers, because it can grow to 60 and is a soft wood like palm or banana (more of a plant than a tree). It is said, that the tree will naturally grow with its leaves pointing east and west, as a guide to the lost traveler. In the wild plants grown from seed, this looks to be true. But Ive noticed plants off-course. They were planted from nursery stock and started off not knowing their duty to the wayward traveler.
Trees are the earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.~Rabindranath Tagore
